Garden equipment FAQs

Q: Should I buy a reel lawn mower?
A: First of all, for those who do not know, a reel lawn mower is kind of like the sort that your grandparents or great-grandparents might have used. In other words, it is not powered by gas or electricity – rather, it is man-powered. The benefit of using a reel mower is that it is better for the environment, is it so much quieter than other lawn mowers, and the design as improved greatly over the years, so it is not nearly as difficult to push as you might think. A reel lawn mower is perfect for anyone who has a small yard to a medium sized yard. If your yard is larger, you may want to consider an electric lawn mower. Also, realize that if you own a reel lawn mower, you are going to have to have generally good lawn care and upkeep – once the grass is at a certain height, it can be pretty difficult to cut with a reel lawn mower. Also, a reel lawn mower is not quite as good at cutting down weeds as other mowers are.

Q: Are there environmentally friendly lawn fertilizers?
A: Yes, it is definitely possible to find environmentally friendly lawn fertilizers. The first step, though, to weaning your garden off of chemical dependence (a dependence on chemical lawn fertilizers) is to develop a health lawn. You can do this by improving the soil (buy a pH tester and go from there). Also, use a locally adapted grass. It is good to mow your lawn, but do not keep it too short. Do not water your lawn too often – rather, when you do water, water deeply (it will encourage your lawn to develop a deep root system, making it hardier). An example of an environmentally friendly lawn fertilizer is Spring Lawn’s Alive! For other environmentally friendly lawn fertilizers, contact a local gardening store.

Q: What should I use a trowel for? A spade? A shovel?
A: A trowel is one of the most oft-used garden hand tools. It can be used for digging out weeds, potting, planting annuals and bulbs, and other such things. Many people actually do not know the difference between a shovel and a spade. Knowing the difference will save you a lot of work. A spade is for digging – you will see that the blade is practically parallel with the handle, and it can be pushed straight down into the soil. Some people like to use spades for edging, as well. A shovel, on the other hand, is made for scooping and moving – the blade is at an angle to the handle, allowing you to scoop without stooping.

Q: How can I make my time in the garden more comfortable?
A: If you garden a lot, you probably spend a lot of time down on your hands and knees – therefore, you want to make sure that you protect both your hands and knees. Make sure that you have an excellent pair of gardening gloves – buy gardening gloves that are thick enough to protect your hands, but supple enough to allow you to grasp your tools and weeds. Also, find some gardening gloves with some built-in grip. You should also buy knee pads and/or a cushioned mat – these items will give your joints some relief. Another suggestion is to wear a sun hat to shield your face from the sun, and be sure to bring out plenty of water and to stay hydrated.
